The Difference

"What's the difference between the Academic Associates method and other phonics methods? Aren't all phonics methods the same?"

At Academic Associates we have a remarkable record of success in teaching students of all ages to read. Even very young students can easily learn the rules and sounds in small, logical, sequential steps. Any good teacher can teach reading effectively once these concepts are placed in a usable format.

Most phonics programs include the basic sounds and one or two alternate sounds for some letters. Of course, our program also includes all those basic sounds. But we also include elements largely missing from nearly every phonics course.

In the Academic Associates Reading Program, we teach students the additional sounds and rules as we progress through the course. Our Rule Cards and Reading Lists, plus continuous review assures that every student learns to read. All students progress.

"My child has been through other phonics programs that didn't work. How is this program any different?"

Please examine the following in addition to the explanation above:

  • We do not memorize word lists or phrases.
  • We do not use flashcards. When using flashcards, students tend to memorize instead of learning to read phonetically.
  • We do not use objects or colors to represent sounds. Students are distracted by these and therefore the brain cannot process and apply the material efficiently for further use.
  • We do not use pictures. Pictures encourage guessing and students should never guess while reading.

In other words, we do not use cues to help students learn to read. We work with the brain, not against it. Academic Associates reading method complies with current research, therefore students with reading challenges and disabilities improve and progress consistently in our program.

"My child's school teaches the students to memorize word lists. What's wrong with that?"

Using this method of reading instruction does not work with the way human brains process incoming data. The typical male and some females do not learn reading or much of anything else from inference or by memorizing the shapes of words. When students are taught this way, they are actually memorizing a shape of a word instead of reading. They must be told plainly and directly exactly which letters make which sounds under what circumstances in order to read well. This is extremely important for students struggling with reading. Many challenges with reading can be linked directly to the memorizing of words and inadequate phonics knowledge. So, when students learn to read by a logical, sequential method that teaches them rules they can follow, and some exceptions to those rules, they quickly learn to read.

While many of our students diagnosed with dyslexia, auditory discrimination or other learning difficulties have overcome their disabilities and are now able to read well, our gifted students and others who already excel in reading have advanced several grade levels. No other method has ever been so effective.

We TEACH reading, we do not tutor.

Parent Welcome to Sit In
We welcome parents to sit-in on the sessions. Other centers do not allow observers in the sessions. Parents sit in a clearly separate waiting area. But, with Academic Associates Reading Clinic, you can follow your student's teaching first hand if desired. This also gives parents clear direction in how to review and assist their child.
